'Quest: A Time Of Heroes' Review

Quest: A Time of Heroes is a lite-rpg that can be played in a matter of minutes after opening the rulebook. The story centers on a group of heroes (1 - 4 heroes) who came upon the island of Krokk after coming across a treasure map which they spent their last remaining gold with, not knowing that something is happening on the island at that very moment that will intertwine with their fate.

Gameplay Overview
The gameplay centers around 1 game master (GM) and 1 - 4 heroes around a table. The GM picks up one of the adventures from the adventure book and the players choose their starting heroes. Story-telling is a strong factor in this game as the GM will read out passages from the adventure book to tell the story. At certain crossroads, heroes will be presented with options. Most options will not be a live-or-die option, rather, they present challenges and possible rewards with the right decision made. At certain parts of the story, battles will break out and the heroes find themselves having to fight through the enemies. If they are victorious, they can proceed with the next phase of the story. Otherwise, they suffer the consequences, many of which are not desirable.

The game consists of 2 parts: the first being the story-telling part and the second being the battles. The story-telling is similar to a D&D session, but very streamlined and with some choices to make. The battles lean toward table-top wargames rather than D&D battles, where characters can move anywhere within the map as long as they move within a certain movement range depicted on the character cards. This makes the battle faster and more flexible.

My Thoughts On The Game
Those who have read books which provides the reader options (such as, if you choose this path, turn to page 12, if not, turn to page 22) will immediately feel comfortable with the game design. Although there are only 5 adventures in the book, players can create their own adventures after that. Those who are D&D veterans may scoff at the idea of a lite-rpg. However, it cannot be denied that Quest is ideal for newcomers to the table-top fantasy roleplaying games. As an introduction for newcomers to table-top rpgs, this is one game not to be missed.

Overall gaming experience: B+
